A smooth, quality transition to Kindergarten will bring life long benefits to a child. Over 60 kindergarten teachers and early childhood professionals attended a special training to learn more about how to make that happen.  The workshop, presented by Ken Smythe-Leistico , Assistant Director of the University of Pittsburg Office of Child Development  provided participants information about key indicators that lead to a child’s readiness for school and the impact and importance of parent engagement on school success.

Smythe Lesitico is one of the creators of Ready Freddy Kindergarten Transition Initiative. The Ready Freddy Program was created in collaboration with Pittsburgh Public Schools, engaged parents and multiple community partners and has seen great success.

Herrin School district implemented the “Ready Freddy” Kindercamps last Winter for children who were entering Kindergarten the following year along with their parents.

The program is scheduled to begin again later this month. Carterville School district is scheduled to launch their initiative in February.
